Each person is on the corner of a square set, far away enough so that you cannot hold hands with either your partner or your opposite, but not too far. NB: The video on YouTube is NOT correct with regard to this. The diagram below shows the starting positions and the path for A1 Bars 1-4.

When teaching, Alan suggests roughing in the general structure and then refining rather than telling people too much at once. When you get to the lead in (A1 bars 1-4), note that each person walks around a circle. You may also want to suggest that in A2 5-8 the ladies elongate the gypsy a little so that they arrive just in time to do the ladies cross. In A3, when casting back, the men can loop around each other inside the set.
